The Premier International Club in Asia
Following the end-of-year celebrations and a 10-day holiday break, work on the new Club building resumed with gusto on January 4. As the steel erection and concrete pouring continued on the aboveground floors, finishing work began on the basement levels.
The end of the year was commemorated on the construction site with a large-scale mochi tsuki ceremony on December 25. Hundreds of workers took part in the auspicious New Year custom, pounding steamed rice into a sticky paste with a heavy mallet.
After a little more than one year of construction and just over a year to go before the new Club is completed, progress of the facility is on schedule. While construction was delayed earlier in the year by the discovery of a number of underground obstructions, the schedule is back on track with the foundations and structure of the basement levels now finished.
With the rainy season having given way to the annual onslaught of typhoons, the construction team in Azabudai has to contend with its share of wet weather in addition to the soaring summer temperatures.
In his first visit to the Azabudai site since the groundbreaking ceremony last September, Club President Lance Lee spent one late May morning taking in the massive scope of changes that have unfolded since construction began in early 2008.
The project passed a key milestone in March with the placement of the first permanent steelwork on the site, which will eventually become the beams and columns around the Bowling Center and Childcare Center.
The demolition of the old Club buildings at Azabudai continued through the summer. This was followed by the start of excavation as crews began to work their way down the basement levels at the back of the former facility.
With as many as 150 dump truck loads moving every day through the construction site at Azabudai, the excavation phase has been a high-traffic, extremely systematic affair.
Following presentations by Pelli Clarke Pelli this spring, the local consulting teams have been plugging away to finalize details of the new Club in Azabudai and obtain government approval for the permits needed to begin construction.
Renowned architect Cesar Pelli of Pelli Clarke Pelli, the firm behind the design of the new Azabudai Club, presented the design to the Membership on April 15.
